A work order is a NPC crafting commission. The NPC will specify what items are required, provide the crafter with materials with which to complete the order and also the recipes required to craft the item(s) for the work orders.

Some work orders require that you make more then one item, in which case the recipe provided will have "charges" so that you can use it more then once to create the items. You may turn in less items then requested, but you will receive less reward.

When the work order is complete, the player character does not keep the items crafted, he turns in the crafted items to the NPC. He then is rewarded some coin and may also receive items (used in crafting process, special components...), this rewards vary according with the quality of the items produced for the work order.

Orders are dynamic, and completing a request will affect the orders seen by every player in the city. [1]

Work orders perform two important functions in Vanguard:

  • Providing a crafting levelling mechanism which does not require the crafter to be constantly seeking out crafting resources and avoids flooding the economy with goods.
  • Supplying NPC citizens, including those in player cities, with items necessary for city functions (such as swords for the City Watch).

Work orders can be given to individual crafters, but group work orders have also been mentioned.

[edit] Work Order Types

There are three types of work orders, each with different rewards.

  • One item work orders. These will have a simple name such as "Tin Kite Shield" and only yield coin and faction for completion. The higher the grade of the completed item, the more money rewarded. Generally this is a certain amount times your grade. For instance if Grade D yielded 10 copper, Grade C would yield 20 and so on.
  • Three item work orders. These will have a name that starts with "Set" such as "Set of Jute Bags" and yield coin rewards as well as vendor purchased crafting consumables and merchantable items. Again, the amount you receive and the number of items in your bag is based on the quality of the items. If you fail to complete all three items and turn in a partial work order, you only receive coin, and very little coin at that.
  • Five item work orders. This will have a name that starts with "Batch" such as "Batch of Basalt Coffins" and yield coin reward as well as a supply pack that can contain the items from three item recipes plus a chance at a rare reward. The amount of coin and quality of pack are directly related to the overall quality of the items produced.
    • All Grade A - Yellow pack. 3-4 items inside.
    • Average of B or better - Blue pack. 2-3 items inside.
    • Average of C or better - Green pack. 1-2 items inside.
    • Below C average or incomplete order - No pack, just coin.

Note: The rare reward can be any number of things including but not limited to:

  • Dust or crystals to add enhancements to items
  • Tier appropriate crafting clothing
  • Tier appropriate crafting tools
  • Harvestable resource (eg. Tin, Jute, etc)
  • Rare harvestable resource (eg. Nickel, Carnelian, etc).
