[edit] Known Available Locations
It will only be possible to build these structures in an appropriately zoned area (an area may be zoned for industrial structures only, for instance). There will be some flexibility in terms of alignment of your building, but placement will be along the lines of gridded layouts.
It will not be possible to construct housing right next to a resource area or the entrance to a dungeon. However, it is expected that players will be able to place constructed buildings closer to certain adventure areas than already existing outposts.

[edit] Design
The structures will be themed for their continent, and there will be some styles which can only be constructed on their continent - only building Kojan-style buildings on Kojan, for instance. This also means you can only use Kojan materials for Kojani houses.
[edit] Construction
The Mineralogist is the primary crafter for houses. Blacksmiths and Outfitters may provide additional items depending on the house under construction. Carpenters can also help out with some of the simple stuff. As for how long, that depends on a lot of things. If you already have all of the resources, it doesn't take that long to craft all of the items and haul them to the construction site. If you have nothing at all, then it might take you a while to harvest everything and craft it.
House only recipes will need to be quested. ... Some of the quests are just basic practice quests that introduce you to the recipe while others will put you in harms way running around the world studying the work of the masters.
The resources required increases with the size of the building. It takes longer to make bigger houses.
[For guild halls] 10 dedicated people could do a lot. A solo person would only have problems obtaining the interdependent items, but could do it themselves in a reasonable amount of time. All of this is relative of course. It depends on what you think is a short / long time and it all depends on how you're obtaining resources. Certainly a well organized guild will do much better than a solo player at the larger projects.

[edit] Access
Access to residential (and possibly commercial and industrial) structures can be restricted by the owner of the building. A house might be made open to the general public, with particular individuals banned, or perhaps be set to only allow the owner or a small group of friends access.
Other possibilities are for permission to be given for others to leave and collect items, or to pay upkeep on player structures.
[edit] Storage
One of the advantages of these buildings, particularly residential structures, is their ability to provide storage space, considerably expanding the inventory of players.
[edit] Upkeep
Player structures require upkeep, and function in a similar way to pets. Buildings may need to be regularly supplied with wood to handle minor maintenance. Your building also has hit points, and can be attacked and 'killed'. When this happens, you will need to call in a crafter for repairs.
The location of your structures will have a big effect on the amount of upkeep required. If you build near hostile and territorial NPCs, you might even need to hire henchmen as guards to watch over your buildings when you're not logged on.
[edit] Naming
Like pets and other extensions of player characters, it will be possible to give housing names.
[edit] Player Cities
In addition to constructing buildings owned by individual players, player cities are expected to appear over time. These cities bring a new level of complexity to player structures, and are expected to form a significant component of gameplay for the Diplomacy Sphere.
