[edit] Description
Harvesting is a sub-sphere available to all Player characters. It is a separate sphere and a very important source for crafting ingredients.
[edit] Purpose of Harvesting
Harvesting is the process of collecting resources such as Wood or Minerals, which are used for crafting. Harvesters can collect these resources individually, or group with other harvesters to increase the quality or quantity of their yield.
[edit] Harvesting Skills
There are no harvesting Classes. Instead, players can choose a Primary and Secondary Harvesting Skill from the following:
There is also a general harvest skill that is used when you help others harvesting resources that are not your primary or secondary harvesting skill.
[edit] Resource Tiers
Harvesting resources fall into different tiers of difficulty. You must reach the appropriate skill level to be able to start harvest from a tier (each at every 100 skill points). People need to have a likewise corresponding harvest skill to be able to help you harvesting after you started it, if they dont have your harvest skill.
In addition, beginning at tier 2, there are rare versions which spawn randomly where normal versions spawn, and beginning at tier 3, there are even ultra rare versions. How much rarer an ultra rare is compared to a rare version, depends upon the resource type, but typically its about half as often.
Harvest often gets a depletion bonus. These are extra items dropping from the resource, sometimes rares or ultra rares, but more often various potions, special crafting utilities, and very seldom crafting enhancements (mostly attuning).
Gemstones drop very frequently from stone nodes as if it would be a depletion bonus; however, this much more frequent than other kinds of depletion bonusses.
All resources have a full item, which is actually useable in crafting, and a partial item. Twenty of the partial items make a full item. Full item(s) can be split into partial items by rightclicking them and agreeing to the dialogue, and partial items can be combined to full items by rightclicking on them and agreeing to the dialogue. Full items can be stacked up to 20, partial items up to 100. Its common practice of scammers to put a partial item into the broker and sell it for the price of the full item.
There are some special armor recipes form quests which use tier 6 resources, but they arent that exciting.
[edit] Metals
Metals are used in blacksmithing. They are harvested with a pickaxe. Their nodes are found near rock walls. The full item is named ore, the parts is named chunk.
Stone is used by Artificers in mineralogy. They are harvested with a hammer. Like metal, they can be found in deposits near rock walls. The full item is named slab, the part is named chunk.
Gems are used by Artificers in mineralogy. Gems can be found occasionally in deposits. The full item is called sample. Only full parts are found, but they can be split by hand into shards, even if that makes little sense other than to try a scam.
[edit] Timber
Timber is used by Artificers in carpentry. They are harvested using axes. They can be found in tree and root nodes. The full item is called timber, the part is called log.
Hides are used by Outfitters in leatherworking. They are harvested using a knife. The full item is called hide, the part is called Strip.
[edit] Textiles
Textiles are gathered from plants for Outfitters in tailoring. They are harvested using a sickle. The full item is called bale, the part is called shaef.
[edit] Harvesting Training
[edit] Starting Out
To select your Primary and Secondary Harvesting Skills, you must locate a Harvesting Instructor (usually a Harvesting Vendor), who will offer a basic Harvesting Training quest, provide you with basic harvesting tools, and raise your skill level in your chosen skills from 0 to 1. [You cannot initiate harvesting a resource type if you have a skill level of 0 in that skill.]
[edit] Advancing in Levels and Training
As you harvest resources appropriate to your skills, you will raise both your resource-specific skill level and your general harvesting skill level. However, each skill level is capped at the top of the tier. You will need to visit a Harvesting Instructor (vendor), who will be able to supply you with instruction books which you can purchase and read. By reading a new instruction book, you will be able to continue to raise your skill level to the next tier.
You can read these books at x85 skill level (ie. 385 for initiate), but despite the misleading message you get from doing so, you will not be able to harvest the next tier resource until you reach the next century mark. Bonusses from your harvester clothes or your racial bonus wont change anything about this.
Your harvester skill isnt linked in any way to your adventurer or crafter or diplomacy level. However, especially for leather, its impossible to harvest this resource type on your own if you dont have enough adventurer level for it.
[edit] Harvesting a Resource
Before harvesting a resource you must:
- Have a skill level appropriate to both the resource and the tier.
- Have the appropriate harvesting tool equipped.
To commence harvesting, right-click on the resource node. Harvesting will commence (or you will receive a message saying you cannot harvest because of lack of tool or skill).
You do not require any further action. A visual display will indicate your progress toward completion of the harvesting, and when it has been exhausted you will be able to loot the node.
Note: Sometimes, especially in newbie areas, you will get the message "this resource cannot be harvested at this time". Enter "/endharvest" (shortcut "/e" ) on your chatline while you have the resource in question in focus to unlock it. Afterwards, it can be harvested just like normal.
[edit] Node Depletion
All nodes have a maximum amount of resources which can be harvested from them. Your skill level, the type of equipment you wear and assistance from other harvesters in your group will determine how much of the resource you are able to harvest. This is called Depletion. It is not usual that a single player is able to fully deplete a harvesting node, but a single player is still able to gain a reasonable harvesting return.
Depleting a node gives you a greater chance of acquiring 'special' items during harvesting, but these are still able to be accessed solo.
[edit] Group Harvesting
This is THE way to harvest. The nodes get depleted faster so you can harvest more quickly, and you get more out each node.
The rules are as follows:
- You must have the harvest tool for the resource being harvested.
- Only the person initiating the harvest needs sufficient skill in the specialized harvesting skill.
- Anyone assisting must have sufficient skill in general harvesting.
- Everyone who joins has to be in the same group, so the natural maximum is six people harvesting one and the same resource.
[edit] Harvesting Quantity Cap
Unfortunately, there is a harvesting quantity cap. When harvesting a node by yourself, this cap is determined based on your level in the specialized skill (for example, a Copper Node will be based on your Mining skill level). The quantity cap starts at 15 minor units at the minimum skill for a tier, and increases by 1 every 10 skill points up to 27. For example, with 100 mining skill you will cap at 15 tin chunks; with 220 mining skill and above you will cap at 1 ore, 7 chunks.
If you're assisting in a harvest that you don't have the specialized skill for, the amount you can contribute is based on your general harvesting skill and is capped at 20 minor components. If you're trained in the appropriate skill, the maximum you can contribute is the same as if you were harvesting alone.
Interestingly, while the maximum of a single harvester is 27 parts, the limit for two harvesters that have this skill is 55 parts.
[edit] Harvester Gear
The tool required to harvest a special resource is described in the list of resources above (pickaxe for metal etc). This is the only item really required to harvest a given resource type. Especially, you do not need improved tools or clothes to harvest higher tiers. However, better tools and clothes will give you much better results.
Most dedicated harvesters prefer to level their toons to 400+ as fast as possible, updating nothing but their tools before that point, as the influence of clothes is quite small and will be only substantly noticeable if you have maxed everything else, and getting your skill up to 500 is only a question of some days of dedicated harvesting, as there are enough areas where its safe to harvest high harvest even for lowlevel characters. This strategy is of course impossible if the skill in question is skinning, as skinning requires enough level to be able to kill the mobs (unless you can afford a bodyguard doing the job for you).
It is not possible to get the maximum possible result (27 parts, see "Harvesting Quantity Cap" below) from a resource if you do not have tier * 100 + 20 skill in the given skill, and it is not possible to get such a high value in the skill for tier 5. Asking a Tier 5 Tailor for pristine harvester clothing specialized into the given harvester skill gives you a +10 bonus, and being of a race that gets a bonus in the given harvester skill gives another +5 bonus, but thats all that seems to be possible.
Many scammer or clueless crafters love to put crafting tools or clothes into the broker that are not pristine. These items are much less valueable and should be avoided, especially since the price is often almost as high as for pristine versions.
For skinning, or for tier 5, one should get the rare version of tools, i.e. true silver instead of just mithril for tier 5. Only specialized versions (that require skill) of tools can be rare.
For helping others with their resource types, one can also get unspecialized versions of the tools. These have "harvester" in their names, and have a requirement in the general harvester skill, instead of a requirement in the special skill.
[edit] Choosing your Harvester Skills
If you want to have access to skins without help of your guild or without paying insane sums (as leather is the hardest to get resource type), its best to give your main, i.e. highest character the Skinning harvest skill. All other types of harvest can be accessed with relatively lowlevel characters, if you know the right areas.
For crafters, the best harvest skill to get is given by their profession.
- Weaponsmith: metal and stone, for the gemstone jewels they need for upgrading.
- Armorsmith: metal and textiles, for the cloth bolts they need for upgrading.
- Artificer: stone and wood, as they need both for artificer recipes
- Outfitter: leather and textiles, as they need both for outfitter recipes
Another help in the choice of your harvest skills is your racial bonus. This wont be very relevant before you hit 500, but then its another small bonus, compareable with the one from specialist gear, to get a chance for the maximum result from tier 5 resources. The races with a bonus for the various skills are:
- Mining: Dwarf, Gnome, Goblin
- Quarrying: Orc, Varanjar Barbarian, Varathari Barbarian
- Lumberjacking: Kojani Human, Lesser Giant, Qaliathari Human, Thestran Human, Wood Elf
- Skinning: Dark Elf, Half Elf, Kurashasa, Vulmane
- Reaping: Halfling, High Elf, Mordebi Human, Raki
- Nail Care
- Kolcraft Universal 2 Infant Car Seat Carrier
- Jeep Cherokee Sport Stroller
- Podee Double Pack Feeding System
- Fisher Price Perfectly Pink Purse
[edit] Harvesting Macros
People who harvest a lot typically reserve one of the submenus for harvesting. The typical macros used for harvesting are: Staplers
- Summon mount. This cannot be created as a macro - just drop your mount icon on this slot. Bards wont need that one, obviously.
- "/findnextnode". This is usually pressed all the time when you harvest in an area where you havent harvested before. It is also required to target resources that are currently hidden by wandering animals.
- "/autoattack". This is used to start harvest if you have targeted it.
- "/endharvest". This is used for unlocking resources that are giving the "this resource cannot be harvested at this time" message.
