A 'debuff' is a spell or ability which negatively effects the character on whom the debuff has been cast. Debuffs usually wear off (fade) after a set duration, but cannot simply be removed by the recipient.
Some debuffs, such as a curse, may be permanent until an appropriate counter, such as a dispel or remove curse spell, is cast.
The opposite of a debuff is a buff.
