When a character dies in the gaming environment, their body remains in the gaming world as a tombstone, and contains all the items the character was carrying at the time of their death.

NPC corpses can be looted. For a player character's tombstone, two options are available. The character can be resurrected, or the player can respawn at a bind point and return to their tombstone to loot the items. This is known as corpse retrieval (despite the fact you are retrieving a tombstone, Corspe Runs have become the common phrase in MMORPGs). Players can only loot their own tombstone. Should you not be able to return to where you died, your tombstone can be summoned to an altar for an experience penalty, and a 15% equipment durability hit to all gear that was at that tombstone.

While player tombstones will remain in the game for potentially several days, NPC corpses will automatically despawn after a short period, regardless of whether they contain items.

[edit] Death in the water

If you die in the water, your tombstone will fall to the bottom. You may need some type of endearing breath item or spell to retrieve it, or you may be forced to summon it at an altar.
