Traditional clerics have often been criticized as being a one dimensional class, often relegated to simply watching a half-dozen red bars rise and fall. Vanguard promises to drastically change how most healing classes work. Significant emphasis will be placed on a cleric's martial abilities, returning to a more AD&D style of the healer in heavy plate, armed with a mace or other blunt weapons.

Clerics also are particularly good against the undead, with abilities that either only work against the undead or have extra effects when used against the undead.

Clerics will have abilities called "divine favors" and "divine rites" (though there is some speculation that these may be the cleric equivalent of stances). In addition, some Cleric abilities may need to be prepared in advance, and some will have cooldowns of several minutes as opposed to the more common few seconds.

[edit] Cleric Skills and Spells

  • Melee Combat (Specialized): Vanguard clerics will have specialized melee abilities, one of which is "Hammer." A Cleric's melee abilities appear to draw on the their endurance pool, rather than on their mana pool.

  • Heals: Clerics will have a wide variety of healing spells.
  • Direct Damage (Holy): The cleric will have access to decent "nuke" spells from an early level.
  • Resurrection: Clerics receive their first resurrection spell at level 10.
  • Stances: Clerics start out with two stances.
    • Healer's Focus: +15% healing spells, +5% mitigration, -20% damage penalty.

[edit] Learned Abilities

[edit] Affinity

Affinities represent special abilities of clerics, due to the fact that they follow different deities. You need to be level 20 to start one of the affinity quests.

Attention: Affinities have finally gone live with patch 1835 (Mar 11 2007). Information about them is currently incomplete and likely also faulty.

[edit] Death

Death makes you a much stronger spellcaster.

  • Deity: The Sisters
  • Title: Harbinger
  • Quest Giver: cleric instructor Nehi Sekamqa in Ahgram.
  • Extra Stance: Deathbringer's Mien: +30% spiritual damage, +10% critical hit chance, -20% energy cost, -90% healing spells.
  • Extra Ability: Soul Mastery: The power of Anathema/Doom spells is increased substantly.

Spectral Anchor II
Soul Schism II
30 Necrosis I
34 Soul Schism III
36 Wraith Touch III

38 Necrosis II
40 Terror I
Gloom
44 Wraith Touch IV
Spectral Anchor IV
46 Necrosis III
50 Wraith Touch V
Necrosis IV
Death's Kiss
Gravemaster's Aegis

Quick explanation of the spells as the individual spell description pages arent finished yet:

  • Wraith Touch is a new weapon consecration that adds the same damage as Power of Reprisal, but gives you the extra damage dealt as health.
  • Soul Schism is a spell with a short duration (actually not mentioned in description) and a long recast (90 sec), that greatly increases the chance to crit on the victim.
  • Spectral Anchor is a damage over time spell that lasts 30 secs and that also slows the target. it needs both a bit endurance and a bit mana, about 3/4 of what Necrosis needs. The damage dealt is a bit more than an Anathema or Doom of the same level.
  • Necrosis is a damage over time spell. It requires about as much mana as Allivate, but also 20 endurance, and deals about twice as much damage overall as Spectral Anchor, in 48 secs.
  • Terror is a fear spell that lasts 12 seconds for about 100 energy - a lot when you get it.
  • Gloom is a debuff, -20% to accurancy of target.
  • Death's Kiss is a magic finisher.
  • Gravemaster's Aegis requires a fallen humanoid as offensive target, and is quite slow to cast. The caster gets a 60 sec reactive heal that heals for up to 375 per hit and 3000 hitpoints total.

[edit] Peace

The Peace Affinity gives the cleric the mystic ability to soothe the tempers of aggressive entities.

  • Deity: Gloriann(?)
  • Title: Peacemaker
  • Quest Giver: cleric instructor Priest Raoul in New Targonor.
  • Extra Ability: Harmony of Being: Pacify gets stronger, Bestowal of Brilliance gives 10 more points to Intelligence.
  • Edict of Peace I: (Level 20) Pacifism overcomes your target, reducing damage by 54.
  • Edict of Peace II: (Level 30) Improved version.
  • Edict of Peace IV: (Level 50) Pacifism overcomes your target, reducing damage by 150.
  • Power of Peace I: (Level 20) You consecrate your weapon with the power of peace, reducing your opponent's hatred of you by 125 to 134 on every hit.
  • Ethereality: (Level 20) Temporarily makes you imperceptible to enemies who are not already aware of your existence.
  • Penitence: Allows your opponent to see the error of its ways, eliminating its hatred for others and reducing the range at which it will react with anger.
  • Durance: Imprisons your offensive target in a spiritual prison, completely preventing movement for 60 seconds.
  • Absolution: Calms all opponents within 10m, making them less aggressive towards you.
  • Blessing of Tranquility: A soothing aura causes your defensive target's melee attacks to generate 30% less hatred.
  • Truce: Your affinity allows you to demand a truce between all enemies and yourself. All enemies will temporarily forget your previous actions.

[edit] Peace Quest

Ensure you have already dropped your previous affinity (if applicable.) This quest begins at the Cleric trainer in New Targonar. Get the quest, Affinity to Peace. You will receive an orb in your inventory. Right-click this orb while you are near Ahgram and the quest is done.

TIP: If you want to complete this faster, recall to a bindstone and use the one-way to Ahgram. You can right-click the orb right at the riftstone. Once there, the fastest route is to grab a griffin from the Ahgram bindstone and fly west and use the Coterie Infinium Sanctuary riftstone. In turn, use that riftstone as a one-way leap back to New Targonar.

[edit] Preservation

Preservation boosts your defenses.

  • Aspect of the Guardian (stance): +15% Block, Immunity to stun, 15% spell damage absorption.
  • Power of the Preserver (passive): Resolution is empowered and grants more AC and hitpoints.
  • Nimbus of Warding: Surrounds your defensive target with a shield that reflects an incoming spell for 5 mins or 2 charges. Minimum Level 30
  • Holy Command: You command your offensive target to stop what it is doing, stunning it for 6 sec. The same target can only be subject to one command every 60 sec. Minimum level: 30
  • Divine Aura: Same as Divine Barrier
  • Balance: Equalizes your group's life, taking the total remaining hit points of everyone in the group dividing it evenly amongst all party members.
  • Protection: Rescues your defensive target from an incoming attack, healing them for 1 and causing the offender to target you for 3 to 5 attacks
  • Boon of the Shieldmaiden: Gloriann blesses you for your dedication. Your chance to block will be increased by 5% and each time you are attacked you will be healed for 375 over 12 sec.

[edit] Purity Quest

This quest is very simple, but can take a bit to do. More information or tips would be appreciated in this section. This quest begins in Leth Nurae at the Cleric Trainer. It has one primary goal and 3 sub-goals. The primary goal is to complete the quest line of a particular set of NPCs. These NPCs whose name I do not remember (they're red gas clouds) require you to do 3 small quests in succession. The first requires you to meet the 3 highborn in Leth Nurae. They're in 3 different areas of the city and only require you to be near them to receive credit for each. Use your location journal. The second step requires that you obtain samples of 3 different gas clouds. The third and final step require you to get 2 pieces of tree bark from the 2 treant guards. You must get them in a specific order, so if you go to one and he refuses to speak to you, go to the other treant first.

[edit] War

War increases your power with the weapon.

  • Aspect of the Destroyer (stance): +30% damage, +10% accuracy, +15% block chance. Heals -75%.
  • Might of Ghalnn (passive): Endowment of Fervor is empowered and grants more Strength and Constitution.
  • Avatar of Ghalnn: 10 minute reuse, 30 second duration. +20% damage, +10% crit chance, immune to stun and knockback. Self only.
  • Speed of Ghalnn: 10 minute reuse, doesn't put a buff or duration of anything on you (Still testing this out) Causes all of your melee attacks to strike twice. I'll update this one when I try it out on a mob that won't die in one hit.
  • Barrier of Carnage: 1 minute reuse, almost exactly like Aegis of Blades. AOE dmg shield, any opponent within 6m takes 311 to 330 damage every 3 seconds, lasts 36 seconds. Edit: This does not stack with Aegis of Blades. One will cancel out the other.
  • Blood Hammer V: 10 endurance, Finisher. 400% weapon damage +357 to 380.
  • Hammer of Carnage IV: 10 Endurance, Finisher. 400% weapon damage + 429 to 456
  • Truncheon of Ghalnn III: 10 Endurance, Finisher. 400% weapon damage + 502 to 531.
  • Punishing Strike III: Counterattack after a successful block, dealing 300% weapon damage plus 294 to 315. No endurance cost, no reuse.

[edit] War Quest

This quest is very easy. The quest is obtained in Hathor Zhi. Some races may be required to grind faction. This is about a 2 hour job at tops killing level 6 and 7 mobs just NE of Hathor Zhi. Do not kill them in one hit or you get no faction gains.

This quest tells you to go to Donovan. He is on the south side of the CiS mountain in the CiS chunk. He stands under a tent just north of the riftstone against the side of the CiS mountain. The quest he offers requires you to get 4 pieces of infinium and a slavers sword. The slavers sword drops from the slavers that are on horseback south of him in the infinium plateaus. The 4 pieces of infinium are mined from special nodes at the entrance area in the plateau. They can only be mined if you get an infinium mining pick from an infinium miner. They can be kept and used again and can even be kept in your harvesting pack.

[edit] Beta Information

Long before their implementation, affinities where preannounced this way (compare links in References):

Affinity Deity Ability
Death The Sisters Increased damage to all megaspells
Light / Purity Fieros Calls down a sunbeam, which wipes out undead opponents and blinds other opponents
Life Gloriann Increased hit point buffs, increased potency for poison cures, and increased constitution buffs
War Ghaln Power of Carnage, a major combat buff
Travel Finch Immunity to roots and snares, while boosting potency of root spells. At higher levels, unlocks sojourn ability, which buffs levitation, water breathing, swimming speed, invisibility, and run speed
