Within each sphere, players are divided by a class. Up until level 10 a player is free to experiment with different classes (in accordance with race restrictions at the starting area). Once you are level 10 you are commited to a chosen class.

[edit] Offensive Fighters

These are the light fighters, who emphasive on offense. They generally can wear leather or chainmail (except Monks).

  • Ranger - Outdoorsman
  • Rogue - Stealthy, shadowy fighters
  • Bard - Musical travelers
  • Monk - Well disciplined fighters ( thought to use psionics or perhaps chi; this is uncertain)
  • Berserker - A chaotic, near suicidal ravager

[edit] Healers

These magic users emphasive healing & supporting allies. All can wear leather armor (except Disciples).

[edit] Arcane Casters

Powerful spellcasters. They can only wear robes.

[edit] Crafting Classes

These are the tradeskillers, building items from resources and components at crafting tables.

[edit] Diplomatic Classes

Diplomats who seek to facilitate communications. Unlike crafting and adventuring, diplomats use a branched system, with the option of specializing into classes and later sub-classes.

[edit] Developer Quotes

"Vanguard does NOT use a tree system. Classes are derived from core jobs, but they don't branch. Each class can perform as well as the other at their core job in the vast majority of cases so we avoid the specialist vs. generalist problem, but outside of that they are specifically being designed to feel and play differently. Shamans and clerics and do different things, for example. And then, even when we're talking about those core areas where they do share a job (healing in this case), they go about healing very differently. So far in beta people have liked the different feel we are getting from the classes. This is very important as well, because replayability is very important to us. We want players to have multiple characters. By playing different classes and races, and by starting in different parts of the world, your experience should indeed feel different and be compelling." - Aradune Mithara[1]

[edit] Disclaimer

As of October 2005, the character classes are based on known information. As Vanguard is still in early beta testing, any of this may change by launch.
