At the beginning, every player is a generic diplomat. After a point in progression the player will have to seek out trainers to further specialize their diplomatic skills.
Diplomacy classes, along with their subclasses, are distinguished by their affinities to different areas of society, and their approach to the diplomatic parley encounters. Certain classes may be adept at dealing with the flattery and verbal jousting of court society, while others are more comfortable with a style of outright intimidation more suited to the underworld. And unlike adventuring classes, any race can choose any diplomacy class.

Unlike adventuring and crafter classes, you don't choose a diplomacy class at first.
"Normally when you play an MMO, you pick your class as one of your initial choices in creating your character. We chose to instead give you the opportunity to play through diplomacy for quite a while (and you will be doing some of the "default activities" of the Diplomat for a while to really get used to them) so you can decide which sort of Diplomat you want to be. Each of the four classes is loosely based around each of the Expressions. The Demagogue is noted for the ability to Inspire, for instance, and the class ability for Demagogue reflects this.
This moves class from a defining feature that directs your character from the start to a customization feature - with benefits. You grow into your class, and will show it as a badge of progression. The subclass was brought in to augment this - seeing a Firebrand, no matter their Adventuring or Crafting level, means you have a very experienced diplomat who really knows how to Inspire people." - Aruspex [1]
