The word casual is used in different ways by different people, but the common definition of casual is a 'time-poor' player. A casual player is one who, for whatever reason, is unable to play for a very large number of hours each week (especially contiguous hours).

A casual player is not necessarily a solo player, and may even be a regular raid participant, but time-poor players are often glad to have solo or small group content available, as the time spent assembling a group or raid may be more than they can spare.

The 'casual' and the 'hardcore' are often considered to be at opposite ends of the gaming spectrum, and much as been written about the casual player whining to make games easier and the 'bleeding edge' hardcore player rampaging through content and then crying they have nothing to do. Much forum angst is spent on this issue.

In Vanguard, 'casual' content has been created with a target number of solo or small groups of adventurers, but this content may not be as rich or diverse as the content aimed toward the party-focused core player.
