The Encounter Routes of Vanguard's Advanced Encounter System (AES) take elements of the lucky drop, the quest and the named spawn to combine into chance-met adventure.

[edit] Finding Encounter Routes

Larger dungeons can support multiple encounter routes, but even so it is very rare for a party to receive a trigger for an Encounter Route. Many triggers are received as a drop during the normal course of adventuring through dungeons. These drops start the party on an interactive quest through the dungeon, leading the players to follow a specific route, to spawn events, and, so long as the party succeeds in meeting the Encounter Route's conditions for completion, to receive a juicy reward. Other triggers may be more subtle, including for example killing a certain mob or combination of mobs.

The conclusion of an Encounter Route might be the discovery of a hidden treasure chamber, or the spawning of a rare named, or even an elite friendly npc.

[edit] Encounter Route Eligibility

Encounter Routes are tied to the dungeon in which they are triggered, so you must be in the designed level range of the dungeon to be eligible to trigger or join an Encounter Route.

The reward content spawned by an Encounter Route is locked to the party which triggered the Route. At times, this includes certain Golden Mobs which only the party can engage. However, it is possible for additional players to join the party following the Route.

Encounter Routes are not an entitlement, and it is extremely unlikely that every player will experience every Encounter Route.

[edit] Overt Encounter Routes

Overt Encounter Routes will give players feedback as they progress through the encounter, and instructions about what the party should do next will often be issued.

[edit] Covert Encounter Routes

Covert Encounter Routes will be closer in feel to the treasure hunt after you've accidentally burned the map. You may receive subtle clues about your progress, but clear instructions will be far rarer.

[edit] Stages of the Encounter Route

Full details of how and when an encounter route is activated, and how it progresses, have not been announced, but it has been stated that:

  • An item which can trigger an encouter route may remain in the party even after it triggers the first stage of the encounter route.
  • More commonly, however, the trigger item will disappear from the party's inventory once the encounter route has been triggered.

Encounter routes may have a number of stages. While two different parties are unlikely to be able to activate the same stage of an encounter route at the same time, it is probable that different parties could be at different stages of the same encounter route.
