Area of Effect spells (or attacks) do damage not only to one monster, but to all monsters in a surrounding area as well. The range and intensity of such an attack is dependent on the spell and the level of it or its owner. Classes that have access to Area of Effect attacks can be very useful in group play.

Area of Effect is quite often abbreviated as 'AoE' or 'AE'.
